This is a classic late-1930s Basket Quilt in soft lavender and white with appliquéd flower baskets made from vibrant 1930s feedsack and printed cotton fabrics. The quilt is based on a quilt pattern that appeared in the Kansas City Star in 1934, a newspaper that was one of the most influential quilt pattern sources of the early twentieth century.
The quilt has an on-point layout with alternating lavender blocks and basket appliqué blocks, all framed by multiple lavender and white borders. The basket fabrics include lively plaids, checks, and novelty prints in bright reds, blues, greens, pinks, yellows, and oranges typical of the 1930s period.
The hand quilting is in feather wreaths in the open lavender blocks as well as in outlines of the applique work and in a dense cross-hatch grid along the four-sided lavender and white border.
The back is white cotton while the binding is lavender cotton that has been machine-stitched to the front and hand-stitched to the back. The cotton batting is lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent vintage condition with a binding that is beginning to fray. The quilt has been soaked, hand-washed with fragrance-free soap and line-dried, giving a light natural sun-dried cotton scent (not artificially fragranced).
