This is a charming little quilt from 1923 featuring an gingham puppy and calico cat accented in soft blue fabric with red embroidery stitching, along with the nursery rhyme:
“The gingham dog went ‘Bow-wow-wow!’ The calico cat replied ‘Me-ow!’”
The quilt is hand embroidered and dated “1923” on the back with the inscription “Made by Aunt Borg for Norman".
The rhyme is taken from the 1894 Eugene Field's poem - here is how the rest of that stanza goes: The gingham dog went ‘Bow-wow-wow!’ The calico cat replied ‘Me-ow!’ The air was littered, an hour or so, With bits of gingham and calico, The while the cook and the bell-hop slept, But the little toy dog and the little toy cat had a terrible fight!
The simple diamond quilting pattern is machine stitched. The back is a tiny blue print that has been turned to the front and machine stitched to form the binding while the cotton batting is unsized and lightweight.
CONDITION: The quilt is in excellent vintage condition with some overall age-related fading of the fabrics. It has been soaked and freshly hand-cleaned and line-dried, giving a light natural sun-dried cotton scent (not artificially fragranced).
