  • Details
This charming Circus-themed Quilt is from the 1930s and was likely made from a popular Simplicity pattern from the era. It is filled with whimsical hand-appliquéd animals and playful folk art details that are straight out of a Depression-era traveling circus poster.

A clown stands at center stage surrounded by circus performers and animals including a lion, tiger, elephant, giraffe, camel, seal balancing a ball, teddy bear, pony, panda on a bicycle, and more — all stitched in expressive folk art style. Bright balloons float around the scene, while rows of hand quilting radiate outward.

The maker used a wonderful assortment of feedsack and cotton fabrics in cheerful 1930s colors, with a lively blue striped border framing the quilt. The appliqué work is entirely hand done and outlined with colorful embroidery stitching that provides detail and personality. The back is white cotton as is the binding that has been machine stitched to both sides. The cotton batting is lightweight.

CONDITION: The quilt is in very good vintage condition with some fabric loss in the black fabric of the panda and the seal. See photos.
