This beautiful antique London Roads Quilt is a striking example of late 19th century American patchwork, featuring rich indigo and cadet blue prints set against a soft tiny print red-and-ivory ground. The bold geometric layout is entirely hand pieced and hand quilted, with remarkably fine and even quilting throughout in triple diagonal grids.
The front ground fabric and many of the indigo prints are small geometric shirtings and indigo calicos typical of the era in deep indigos, lighter cadet blues, plaids, and small-scale geometric prints. The back is an ivory cotton while the binding is a blue and red cotton print that has been hand stitched to both sides. The cotton batting is lightweight.
CONDITION: The quilt is in excellent antique condition overall with only one small tan spot noted on the front (see photos). It is remarkably well preserved for its age. It has been soaked, freshly hand-washed with fragrance-free soap and line-dried, giving a light natural sun-dried cotton scent (not artificially fragranced)
