This charming little ZigZag Quilt is a wonderful survivor from the late 19th century, dating to approximately the 1870s–1880s. Measuring 34” x 36”, it was likely made for a baby’s cradle, carriage, or small child’s bed with a striking zigzag or chevron design rendered in pink and olive-green calico prints on the front and a Bar design on the back.

The tiny floral calicos are quintessential fabrics of the mid-19th century with the soft pink border framing the center beautifully on the front of the quilt. During most of the 19th century children were considered miniature adults so it made sense to make baby quilts identical to adult quilts (except much smaller) with the same patterns, fabrics and quilting. The hand quilting on this little quilt is in zig zags in the body of the quilt and in diagonal grids along the four-sided border.

The quilt is reversible with the back in a Bars pattern rendered in the same pink and green fabric as the front. The pink border fabric from the front has been turned to the back and handstitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is very lightweight.

CONDITION: The quilt is in excellent antique condition. Please review photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
