This is a meticulously made and unusually small antique Amish doll quilt, measuring just 13 1/2” x 13 1/2”, dating to approximately 1905–1920.
This tiny quilt is constructed entirely in saturated solid fabrics in deep forest/bottle green, purple-plum, and brilliant pink, creating the dramatic color relationships associated with early Amish quilts. The center is constructed as a purple square set on point and surrounded by narrow green bars with small purple squares at the intersections. Brilliant pink setting triangles surround the center, followed by a wide green border accented with purple corner blocks and a narrow green binding.
This could have been a first-quilt or made by an experienced quilter for a young child, but in either case it has multiple quilting motifs hand quilted into the center, borders and body of the tiny quilt. The hand quilting includes a center flower, a twisted rope pattern along the four-sided border and hearts and floral motifs in the rest of the body of the quilt.
The back is a single deep green solid fabric that has been turned to the front and handstitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is very lightweight.
CONDITION: The quilt remains in excellent antique condition. The solid fabrics show the subtle irregularities, fading and color variation expected in early textiles. The purple in particular has developed variations in tone, while the green has a beautifully aged surface. Please examine the photos as they form an important part of the description.
