Antique 1890s Colorado Arrowhead Quilt – Indigo Blue, Plaid & Red – Hand Quilted – 65” x 72”

Wonderful late 19th-century Colorado Arrowhead Quilt, dating to approximately 1890–1900 made of early cotton prints, woven plaids and shirtings.

The Colorado Arrowhead pattern is constructed from repeating angular pieces that interlock across the quilt, in this case in a palette of indigo, cadet blue and faded blue cottons against white, with scraps of red and pink prints, blue-and-white stripes, red and green plaids, gray and yellow plaids, checks and other period garment fabrics. A handful of vivid red-and-black plaid pieces act as accents. The different blues range from pale, softly faded blue to deep indigo, including small-scale white-on-blue geometric and figured prints typical of the period.

The quilt is hand pieced and densely hand quilted, with the hand quilting in an allover diagonal grid. Multiple narrow blue and white borders frame the pieced center while the back is white cotton as is the binding that has been machine stitched to the front and handstitched to the back. The cotton batting is lightweight and thin.

CONDITION: The quilt is in very good vintage condition with fabric deterioration/shattering in several of the striking red-and-black plaid pieces have fabric deterioration/shattering as shown in the photographs. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description. The quilt has been soaked, freshly hand washed and line dried, giving it a light, natural, sun-dried cotton scent (not artificially fragranced).
