This is a lovely 1940s Dresden Plate Quilt made of twenty large Dresden Plate blocks, each assembled from scrappy cottons including many small florals, geometrics, plaids, novelty prints, paisleys, ginghams and feedsack prints in red, blue, green, yellow, pink, lavender, orange and black. The mixture of 1930s prints with the somewhat stronger colors and novelty fabrics appearing in the early 1940s is particularly characteristic of a scrap quilt made around this period.

Each plate has a white center with an appliquéd four-petal teal-green motif. Additional matching green appliqué motifs are positioned between the plates and around the perimeter, creating a very distinctive secondary design against the white ground.

The quilt is hand appliquéd and extensively hand quilted, with tiny hand quilting throughout the white background and around the appliquéd elements. The back is white cotton while the binding is a narrow teal-green cotton that has been machine stitched to the front and handstitched to the back. The cotton batting is lightweight.

CONDITION: The quilt is in excellent vintage condition. The quilt retains strong color and an especially interesting assortment of period fabrics. Please examine the photographs closely as they form an important part of the description. The quilt has been soaked, freshly hand washed and line dried, giving it a light, natural, sun-dried cotton scent (not artificially fragranced).
