Charming antique miniature Log Cabin Doll Quilt dating to approximately the 1920s–1930s with a printed feedsack (sugar sack) back. Its small size suggests it was made as a doll quilt or child’s play quilt.
The quilt is constructed as a single Log Cabin block using period cotton fabrics including blue and white stripes, red and white geometric prints, a red gingham/check, bright yellow floral prints, a blue novelty geometric print, and a bold multicolor floral/paisley print. The combination is very characteristic of Depression-era scrap quilting.
The back is made from a repurposed printed commodity sack. The original printing remains clearly visible reads “FINE GRANULATED TABLE & PRESERVING SUGAR” along with the large SUGAR trademark. This is an excellent example of the economical reuse of commercial sacks in early 20th-century quiltmaking.
The quilt is lightly sewing-machine quilted in diagonal lines and knife-edge finished on two sides and and handstitched closed. The front sherbet orange border on the other two sides has been turned to the back and handstitched to form the binding. There does not appear to be any batting in this tiny quilt.
CONDITION: Very good antique condition. Fabrics remain colorful and intact, and the printed sack backing is distinctive and well preserved. Please examine the photographs closely as they form an important part of the description.
