This charming vintage crazy quilt was made in 1942 of wool and other fabrics in shades of navy blue, teal, forest green, olive, mustard yellow, peach, cream, and light blue. The irregularly shaped fabric pieces are joined with decorative featherstitch embroidery in a variety of contrasting thread colors, including pink, lavender, yellow, blue, and white.
It is made of four blocks with a different embroidered inscription or motif in a peach-colored diamond-shaped patch in the middle of each block. One is embroidered with the name “LINDA,”, another with “MADE BY GRANDMA,” and a third with the date “1942.” The fourth features two small embroidered ducks. Together they seem to form a record of a grandmother’s handiwork and the child for whom the quilt was likely made.
The quilt features a combination of wool and other woven fabrics, including solids, stripes, and textured materials. Several patches also have additional decorative embroidery. The quilt has been hand quilted in geometric patterns, with the stitching clearly visible on its solid blue cotton backing that has been turned to the front and handstitched to form the binding. The quilt has been foundation pieced onto muslin, which appears to be the only "batting" in the quilt.
CONDITION: The quilt is in very good vintage condition. There is some light discoloration and minor signs of age and use in several fabric patches, including some tiny pinholes in several of the wool fabrics. The decorative embroidery and original inscriptions remain clearly visible. Please examine the photographs as they form an important part of the description.
