This vintage 1930s Wild Goose Chase Quilt, in a pattern also known as Dutchman’s Puzzle, has colorful pinwheel-style blocks arranged in a staggered pattern across a white cotton background.
Each block has eight triangles arranged in a rotating formation and incorporating small florals, novelty designs, polka dots, paisleys, geometric prints, and colorful stripes. Shades of red, blue, turquoise, yellow, pink, lavender, green, and brown provide contrast against the white background.
The blocks are individually hand-pieced and arranged with generous white spacing between them. The hand quilting is in a meticulous crosshatch grid throughout the quilt. The back is white cotton while the binding is a pink print that has been machine stitched to the front and handstitched to the back. The cotton batting is lightweight and thin.
