This is an impressive antique Pinwheel Quilt dating to the 1870s with individually pieced pinwheels arranged in a dense, allover geometric design. Measuring 89” x 90”, this large 19th-century quilt includes 1800s calicos, shirting prints, madder browns, chocolate browns, double pinks, indigo blues, greens, reds, and yellow prints. There are also small-scale geometric prints, paisleys, stripes, florals, and novelty patterns characteristic of the latter half of the 19th century.
The quilt’s intricate construction is a study in light and dark with individual pinwheels emerging in different colors throughout the surface. The quilt has been hand pieced and is hand quilted in a finely stitched diagonal grid.
The back is a madder brown print that has been turned to the front and handstitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is very lightweight and thin. A fabric display sleeve has been sewn to the back, allowing the quilt to be hung for display.

CONDITION: This beautiful antique quilt has condition issues after more than 150 years. Although most of the quilt remains intact and it presents beautifully as a whole, some of the 19th-century fabrics have deteriorated and shattered with age. There are areas of fabric splitting, fraying, and loss, particularly among certain darker printed fabrics. Please examine the photographs as they form an important part of the description.
Despite these condition issues, the quilt retains its striking geometric design and an extensive collection of original 19th-century fabrics.
