This is a very interesting quilt, signed "Grand-dad and Mother Nilbert" and dated 1948, and made up of beautifully and intricately embroidered birds of each state. Note there are only 48 states represented since Hawaii and Alaska did not become states until 1959. In addition, whether intentionally or by accident, some of the quilt blocks have been embroidered on the wrong side - which does not affect the birds, but results in a few of the names, like Iowa, embroidered as awoI. The quilting is intricate for a "bird" quilt and includes flowers, outlines of the embroidery squares and diamonds along the sashing and border.
It has a four-sided border of a pink and white stripes. The back is white cotton while the binding is light pink that has been hand-stitched to both sides. The cotton batting is-lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent condition with some age-related yellowing of the white fabrics.
The quilt has been soaked, hand-washed and line-dried. It is clean and soft and measures 77 inches by 120 inches and comes from a smoke-free and pet-free home. Shown on a queen-size bed.
