This striking and rare Indiana Puzzle or Snail Trail Quilt, circa 1900, has a whirlwind feel to it, with its sky-blue and buttercream fabrics shaped like waves cresting and breaking. It has been so densely hand-quilted that in some locations it is stippled. The quilting is in double and triple diagonals and repeating outlines of the patchwork. The four-sided border is sky blue and yellow and has been quilted in diamonds.
The back is white cotton while the binding is yellow cotton that has been machine stitched to both sides. The cotton batting is unsized and lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent antique condition with fraying of the binding and age-related fading of the fabrics. There is an older small repair/patch to one part of the yellow border.
It is approximately 78 inches by 85 inches and comes from a smoke-free and pet-free home. Pictured on a queen-size bed.
