This antique Bow Tie or Spool quilt dates to the late 19th to early 20th century (circa 1890–1910) and has been entirely hand pieced and hand quilted. The quilt features classic period cottons, including early blues, shirtings, calicoes, and small-scale prints typical of the era. It includes soft indigo/cadet blue solids and shirting-style blues consistent with the late 19th century.
The quilting is dense and expertly done in concentric triangles that cross and become diamonds. The back, like the blue used on the front, is a loose plain-weave cotton, while the binding has been formed by turning the front blue border to the back and hand-stitching. The cotton batting is lightweight.
CONDITION: Unfortunately this is a cutter quilt due to age-related fabric deterioration. The quilt shows advanced textile wear consistent with heavy use and age: • Multiple areas of fabric loss and holes that expose the batting • Shattered and weakened fabrics, particularly in several of the lighter prints and the blue edge • Edge and binding wear • Areas where batting is exposed
