  • Details
This authentic mid-19th-century American quilt is a beautifully preserved example of an on-point Nine Patch design, dating to approximately 1840–1865. The quilt is constructed from nine-patch blocks set on point, creating s a striking diagonal chain pattern using a method of setting blocks that is more labor-intensive than straight-set construction.

The fabrics are classic mid-19th-century cottons, including:
    • Turkey red–style prints
    • Early shirting stripes
    • Small-scale florals and geometrics
    • Madder browns, rusts, and indigo tones

The light ground fabric shows the soft texture and subtle slubbing associated with early cotton, and the quilt is entirely hand pieced and hand quilted. The quilting is worked in a fine diagonal grid, consistent with quilts made in the 1840s–1850s. The cream/white back has been turned to the front and hand-stitched to form a very, very narrow binding. The cotton batting is lightweight.

Condition is very good to excellent for a quilt of this age. There is some expected fabric thinning and minor wear in a few darker prints (see photos)—typical of early red and brown dyes—but no structural issues. The quilt remains sound, visually striking, and display-worthy.
