This is an exceptional and increasingly rare mid-19th-century Rose of Sharon appliquéd quilt, dating to 1840 to 1860 and preserved in unused, never-washed condition. This striking quilt was hand-appliqued and hand-quilted using rich Turkey red cottons and early cream and white fabrics. Unlike many quilts of this era, the stitching remains crisp and dimensional, indicating the quilt was made for presentation or best-room use and then carefully stored.
The hand-quilting is in petals in the body of the quilt and in diamond grids throughout the four-sided sawtooth border.
The Rose of Sharon pattern was one of the most beloved floral quilt designs of the antebellum period, prized for its symbolism of beauty, love, and renewal. This example displays confident handwork, beautifully balanced composition and untouched surface texture. It has entirely hand-stitched construction throughout. The back is white cotton that has been turned to the front and hand-stitched to form the binding.
It is in excellent antique, unused and never washed condition with some very light, small tan marks and some very early signs of beginning fraying of the binding which remains substantially intact.
