  • Details
This is a truly special and visually striking vintage New York Beauty/ Crown of Thorns/Rocky Mountain Quilt, dating to the early Depression era (circa 1930s) and coming from Alabama. This is one of the most collectible, most difficult and rarely found patterns due to the difficulty of its many fine points combined with curves and stars. This example stands apart for its beautifully bright fabric choices, sculptural quilting, and rich Southern character.

The design features the classic radiating arcs and spikes of the New York Beauty pattern, in a beautiful palette of bubblegum pinks, soft blues, mint greens, and buttery yellows. The fabrics include a mix of early feedsack florals and geometric prints.

It has been entirely hand pieced and hand quilted in a shell grid across the quilt. The back is white cotton, as is the binding that has been machine stitched to the front and hand-stitched to the back. The batting is slightly thicker/loftier cotton that was probably hand-carded by the maker.

CONDITION: The quilt is in generally very good and sturdy condition. It has some fabric loss to two small areas (about 1/4 inch) of white fabric on the front, a small hole on the back near the edge that is less than 1/2 inch and does not go through to the front, and a 1/8-inch dark spot in one corner next to the edge that appears to be ink.
