A truly special vintage signature album quilt, hand-made, hand-appliqued, hand-embroidered and hand-quilted. It is also signed by many contributors and dates to the 1930s. This beautiful heirloom quilt features dozens of individually appliquéd motifs — florals, urns, birds, and charming animal figures, including a bulldog signed "INA" — each thoughtfully stitched and signed.
The hand appliqué work is colorful and expressive, and the overall design is joyful and optimistic. The tiny hand-quilting is in perfect diamond grids that extend to the four-sided scalloped border.
The back is white cotton while the binding is pink cotton that has been machine stitched to the front and hand-stitched to the back. The cotton batting is unsized and lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent vintage condition with a fraying binding. Some of the applique is also fraying slightly, most notably the block signed by Martha Sue Johnson (see photos).
