This exceptional Vintage Double Tulip dates to the 1940s and remains in remarkable unused, never-washed condition. The quilt features bold hand-appliquéd tulip blocks framed by a beautifully executed serpentine (scalloped swag) border with dense fan quilting. The hand-quilting also includes cross-hatch grids, feather wreaths, complex floral motifs and outlines of the applique piecework.
The fabrics include Turkey-red prints, teal greens with delicate star motifs, and gingham accents, while the back like the ground on the front is a cream/white. The front and back have been turned to the inside and stitched to form an edge-binding. The cotton batting is lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent vintage condition with one small, about 1/4 inch, tan/toning spot.
Measuring a generous 84” x 84”, this quilt works beautifully as a full or early queen bed quilt and displays wonderfully due to its strong geometry and border design. Its crisp condition suggests it was made for best use or a dowry and carefully stored for generations.
An outstanding example of early 20th-century American quiltmaking, suitable for collectors, decorators, or serious textile enthusiasts.
