This exceptional Bird and Butterflies antique folk art quilt, dating to the 1930s, is a joyful expression of early 20th century quilt making. Rather than following a commercial pattern, the maker created a one-of-a-kind folk art composition, filled with butterflies, swirling tulips and a yellow bird, all meticulously hand-embroidered.
The hand-quilting is in diamond grids in the body and in open diamond zig-zags along the four-sided border.
The back is white cotton while the binding is lavender cotton that has been hand-stitched to both sides. The cotton batting is lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent vintage condition with some fraying of the binding in spots. There is a small - about an inch-long - old repair to one part of the binding and parts of the binding have faded to almost white in several locations.
