This hand-stitched "Friendship" or "Subscription" String Quilt is dated March 29, 1960, and was put together by members of the Caudle Avenue Baptist Church in Springdale, Arkansas. Signature quilts of this era (65 years ago) were often created as fundraisers or to commemorate church milestones, with community members paying a small fee to have their names immortalized in thread.
Unlike most traditional quilts, this one is a fully reversible "two-in-one" quilt with more signature blocks set in a "Medallion" layout on the back surrounded by beautiful mint-green cotton.
The mint-green cotton is turned to the front and hand-stitched to form the binding. There is no batting. The hand-quilting is in diagonals following the lines of the string-quilt patchwork.
The quilt is in excellent vintage condition with bright colors and no condition issues noted. Please note that several of the names have been written but never embroidered. See photos.
