This Yankee Puzzle quilt is a museum quality piece that dates to the late Victorian era through the turn of the century (c. 1880–1890s) and features a curated "scrap" collection of authentic 19th-century fabrics, including: • Double Pinks: The iconic "two-tone" pink prints of the 1880s. • Indigo & Cadet Blues: Deep, rich dyes that have stood the test of time. • Madder Reds: Earthy, mineral-dyed reds characteristic of the era. • Victorian Shirtings: Delicate black-and-white and neutral geometric "mourning" prints.
The hand-quilting is meticulous and impossibly tiny, forming cross-hatch grids in the interior of the quilt and inverted triangle grids along the four-sided border. The border is made from a trailing vine print. This specific trailing vine, featuring golden-yellow or "cheddar" leaves on a neutral ground, was a staple of the Victorian era, designed to frame and act as a contrast to the geometric complexity of the interior of the quilt.
The back is a high-quality Victorian shirting or utility print with gingham-style stripes alternating with dainty pin-dots. The very narrow binding is a dainty pin-dot print that has been hand-stitched to both sides. The cotton batting is very lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent antique condition with some minor, age-related toning on the front and back.
