This is a stunningly complex 19th-century American quilt in a rare variation of the Flying Geese pattern, which creates a secondary "Feathered Star" effect at the intersections. Dating approximately to the Civil War era through the 1880s this quilt has been extensively hand-quilted and entirely hand-pieced.
The fabrics include: • Turkey Red Prints: The quilt features vibrant red-and-white calico prints typical of the mid-to-late 1800s. These dyes have held their color remarkably well over the last 150+ years. • Ground Fabric: The white/cream ground is a fine-weave cotton that shows characteristic "age-shattering," likely due to the early bleaching agents used during production which eventually weaken the fibers. • Backing & Binding: The back and binding are white fine weave cotton • Handwork: This piece is entirely hand-pieced and features incredibly dense hand-quilting (approx. 8–10 stitches per inch) in a utility grid, designed to stabilize the thin cotton batting of the era.
This quilt is in Cutter Condition. It has significant wear, including shattering/ shredding of the white cotton ground, frayed edges, and areas of structural thinning. It is not suitable for use as a functional bedcover but can still be used by textile historians, collectors, or artisans looking for authentic period fabric for restoration and repurposing projects.
