This is a charming Dresden Plate quilt that is dated 1963 in embroidery on one corner (see photos), capturing a moment in mid-century quiltmaking when feedsack and scrap traditions were still very much alive. The hand-quilting is precise and expertly done in outlines of the tiny patchwork that make up each plate and in a cross-hatch grid pattern in the white ground.
This quilt really stands out for the unusually small scale of its Dresden Plates, each measuring just 6 inches across, with an impressive total of 63 plates, all made of a wide variety of fabrics, including: • Feedsack prints • Florals, geometrics, and novelty prints • Plaids, ginghams, and stripes • Bright mid-century colors mixed with softer earlier-style prints
The same scrappy fabrics are used in the four-sided ice-cream-cone-border, which is also finely hand-quilted in outlines of the patchwork with concentric circles quilted at each corner.
The back is white cotton that has been turned to the front and hand-stitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is very lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent vintage condition with no issues noted.
