This is a rarely found pattern - a Kaleidoscope Quilt (Whirling Hexagons) - that is a joyful example of scrappy Depression-era quilt making dating to the 1940s. Built from the center outward, it is bursting with color and challenging geometry. It has been carefully hand pieced from a rich variety of feedsack fabrics and finished with detailed hand quilting in the outlines of the patchwork.
The fabrics are a wonderful mix of authentic vintage feedsack prints—tiny florals, geometrics, novelty prints, and classic polka dots—combined with bright period solids in yellow, coral, teal, and red. The result is a vibrant, scrappy composition.
The back is a soft, pink cotton that has been turned to the front and hand-stitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is lightweight.
The quilt is in excellent vintage condition and is structurally sound.
