This delightful mid-century baby quilt features a sweet and whimsical nursery design of appliquéd animals and colorful balloons, dating to the 1950s. Each block showcases a different animal figure—elephant, giraffe, lamb, donkey, and more—outlined in black and light blue embroidery and appliqued with softly colored novelty prints typical of mid-century juvenile fabrics. Alternating blocks feature appliquéd balloons in bright pink, blue, lavender, and green.
The quilt is constructed of white cotton blocks joined with blue embroidery in a blanket stitch, and finely hand-quilted with flower petals and balloons. The back is a cotton-printed “boy” and “girl” text in pink and blue—a classic mid-century nursery textile detail that helps date the quilt to the 1950s. The cotton batting is lightweight.
CONDITION: This little quilt is in excellent vintage condition with some dropped blanket embroidery stitches (see photos).
