Antique 1920s Patchwork Cutter Quilt – Scrappy Pastels, Shirtings & Feedsack Prints – 71” x 79”

This is a lovely 1920s-era patchwork quilt from Massachusetts with a beautifully worn primitive character and a scrappy look with hundreds of small squares pieced together from a variety of linen, cotton prints, shirtings, plaids, feedsack-style fabrics, and solids. There are bubblegum pinks, buttery yellows, pale celadon greens, faded sky blues, navy shirtings, black-and-white stripes, tiny calicos, conversational novelties, and soft geometric prints. Several fabrics appear to be repurposed clothing textiles and lightweight household cottons.

The hand-quilting is in single-line diagonals. The back is a blue polka-dot cotton print that has a bonus - a row of Churn Dash patchwork (see photos) while the binding is a bubblegum pink cotton that has been hand-stitched to both sides. The lightweight cotton batting is from a company called Dwight Anchor which was known for making Roll Cross Quilted Batting in the 1920s. (Helpfully, there is a label visible from the batting - see photos).

CONDITION: Though more than 90% of this quilt is intact, it is being sold as a cutter quilt due to its timeworn condition, including visible wear, fabric loss, thinning areas, fraying of the binding, and fading. Despite the wear, it is a sturdy and beautiful quilt with a lot of character. It has been soaked, hand-washed with a fragrance-free soap and line-dried, giving a light natural sun-dried cotton scent (not artificially fragranced).
