Antique Redwork Embroidered Quilt c. 1910 – Hand Embroidered Animals, Nursery Rhymes & Children – 73” x 74”

This is an unusual Antique Redwork Quilt dating to approximately 1910–1920, featuring hand-embroidered illustrations with children, nursery rhymes, farm animals, birds and woodland creatures. The embroidery is worked in deep red cotton thread on white cotton fabric, arranged in a nine-block layout with vivid orange-red sashing, white cornerstones, and a wide white outer border.

The individual illustrations are unusual, combining traditional children’s embroidery patterns with animal scenes and familiar nursery rhymes, including “Diddle, Diddle, Dumpling,” “See-Saw, Margery Daw,” “Hush-a-bye Baby,” and “Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater.” Other blocks depict geese, rabbits, foxes, roosters, farm animals, and children at play.

The quilt is entirely hand stitched and beautifully hand quilted, with diamond quilting throughout in very tiny stitches.

The back is white cotton as is the binding that has been handstitched to both sides. The cotton batting is lightweight and thin.

The quilt has been soaked, freshly hand washed and line dried, giving it a light, natural, sun-dried cotton scent (not artificially fragranced).
