This wonderful late 19th century Hexagon Star Cutter quilt is timeworn and charming and entirely hand pieced and hand quilted. Filled with early shirtings, plaids, checks, and indigo blues, the pattern is a striking geometric star across a warm cream ground. The palette includes faded blues, soft pinks, buttery chromes, greys, and muted greens giving the quilt its primitive folk-art appearance. Many of the fabrics are early shirtings and dress cottons, including wonderful indigo prints, delicate checks, and woven plaids typical of the era.

The hand quilting is in repeating shell grids with softly curving and radiating lines. The back is a homespun cream cotton that has been turned to the front and machine stitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is unsized and lightweight.

CONDITION: The quilt is in very good vintage condition, with age-related issues including fading and fabric loss, especially in some of the black fabrics (see photos) and scattered light thinning. The quilt remains sturdy, highly displayable, and usable.
