This beautiful late 19th century Amish quilt was constructed in the classic Monkey Wrench pattern and made from muted homespun linen fabrics in soft sage green, faded plum, olive, brown, and blush pink. The quilt has an understated primitive palette that is typical of the Ohio Amish tradition.
The extensive hand quilting throughout the quilt is especially striking, with beautifully executed feathered and cable-style border quilting surrounding delicately quilted interior blocks. The back is cream/ivory homespun linen as is the binding that has been hand stitched to both sides.
CONDITION: Dating to approximately the 1880s–1890s, this quilt was clearly made for everyday household use and shows the honest wear of more than a century of life. This quilt is being sold as a primitive antique quilt with condition issues. While there are scattered areas of fabric wear, thinning, small holes, and fabric loss — particularly in some darker fabrics and portions of the border (see photos) — the quilt remains visually complete and displays beautifully.
The muted coloration and strong graphic design make this an especially wonderful piece for primitive, early Americana, farmhouse, or folk art interiors.
