This unique little Cathedral Windows quilt is adorable with its colorful little dots hand appliqued at the intersections of the windows. The fabrics are a mix of 1940s and 1950s prints, including bright florals, feedsack-style prints, polka dots, novelty geometrics, and cheerful novelty fabrics in reds, yellows, pinks, blues, greens, and black prints.
A Cathedral Window quilt is created through folding and stitching fabric into individual windows then stitching those windows together rather than traditional piecing and quilting. The finished quilt resembles the stained-glass windows found in Gothic cathedrals, which is how the pattern earned its name.
The Cathedral Windows of the quilt have been stitched together with the colorful applique dots at the intersections with it all framed by a soft pink border that has been machine stitched to the front and hand stitched to the back. As with all Cathedral Windows quilts, there is no batting.
Every stitch was done by hand, and the quilt has that lovely soft drape only old handwork develops over time. The dimensional gathered circles create wonderful visual movement and make this little quilt especially eye-catching and unique.
This would make a wonderful nursery wall hanging, crib display quilt, doll or teddy bear quilt, or simply a beautiful piece of Depression-era textile art for a quilt collection.
