Vintage Appliqué Animal Crib Quilt | c. 1940s–1950s | Hand Quilted Nursery Quilt | 37” x 51”

This charming appliqué Animal Crib Quilt dates to the 1940s or 1950s and measures 37” x 51”. Designed in a cheerful grid layout, it features repeated appliquéd silhouettes of nursery animals including rabbits, lambs, kittens, puppies, squirrels, ducks, chickens, and elephants in bright blue, pink, yellow, green, and purple fabrics.

The appliqué work is entirely hand stitched with embroidered details defining the faces and features of each animal. The quilt is hand quilted throughout in an allover diagonal crosshatch pattern that gives it a soft, lightly textured surface. The back is white cotton as is the binding that has been handstitched to both sides. The cotton batting is lightweight.

The fabrics have the smooth appearance and bright colors associated with mid-century cottons, placing the quilt comfortably in the 1940s to early 1950s. It has a timeless nursery design that works equally well as a crib quilt, wall hanging, or display piece for a child’s room.

CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition. The appliqué remains secure, the colors are bright, and the quilt is clean and sturdy with only gentle signs of age and use, with some small white spots on two of the blocks. The quilt has been soaked, freshly hand washed and line dried, giving it a light, natural, sun-dried cotton scent (not artificially fragranced).
