This late 19th-century Winding Blades quilt is a striking example of one of the most visually dynamic antique quilt patterns. The quilt is entirely hand pieced and hand quilted and retains its original folk art character despite some condition issues as detailed below.
The red fabrics are period cotton prints dating to the 1890s, while the quilting is done in sweeping shell patterned grids. The back is white cotton while the binding is white cotton that has been handstitched to both sides. The cotton batting is very lightweight.
CONDITION: This quilt is being offered as a cutter quilt because of fabric loss and edge deterioration, but it remains a beautiful late Victorian example of the Winding Blades pattern. There is fabric loss in several areas, including on some of the Winding Blades blocks, substantial deterioration, scattered holes, and wear along portions of the edges. The binding has extensive fraying and loss, and there are additional small areas of thinning and wear visible throughout. Please examine the photos as they are an important part of the description.
