This is a really well done vintage Sunbonnet Sue Quilt made from an assortment of printed cottons, plaids, small florals, geometric prints, and solid colors used throughout the appliqué figures.
The quilt features 20 individual Sunbonnet Sue figures, each appliquéd in a different combination of fabrics. The figures are arranged across a pale ground and include a wide variety of period cotton prints in blue, red, pink, yellow, green, purple, aqua, and brown.
The appliqué work is hand stitched, and the quilt is densely hand quilted, including quilting within the individual figures as well as closely spaced quilting across the background. The quilting remains clearly visible and gives the quilt substantial texture.
The back is a chestnut brown cotton that has been turned to the front and handstitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is lightweight.
Condition: Due to condition issues this quilt is being sold as a cutter quilt. The issues include areas of fabric deterioration, staining/discoloration, edge and binding wear, and several areas of damage or loss. Some appliqué fabrics also show deterioration, including the purple fabric visible in the photographs.
Despite these issues, approximately 90% of the quilt remains intact, including the great majority of the appliquéd figures and hand-quilted surface. It still retains a large amount of usable original quilt material.
