This Vintage Signature/Friendship Quilt in an Algonquin Charm pattern is dated in "1958" in several locations comes from Ohio. It contains twenty signatures - 18 of them individually embroidered, some with dates, and two in colorfast ink. The 1950s cotton prints include plaids, checks and solid fabrics, set together with aqua sashing and pink cornerstones, all surrounded by aqua/mint green sashing and a four-sided border of the same color.
Signature quilts, also commonly called friendship or autograph quilts, were particularly popular in American communities from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century. Friends, relatives, neighbors, church members or members of another community group would sign or embroider their names on individual blocks, which were then assembled into a quilt. They were frequently made to commemorate an important occasion, a birthday, wedding, anniversary, a welcome or a farewell or simply as a permanent record of a particular circle of family and friends. Because the names survive with the textile, signature quilts provide an unusually tangible record of the people associated with a particular community and time.
The hand quilting is expertly done in a repeating shell pattern. The back is an ivory/light tan cotton that has been turned to the front and handstitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is lightweight.
CONDITION: The quilt is in very good vintage condition with some fraying of the binding. Please review the photographs as they form an important part of the description.
