This is a rare and very charming 1942 folk art children’s duvet cover, featuring hand-appliquéd alphabet letters paired with whimsical pictorial motifs. Each block combines a soft pastel letter with a playful image — birds, animals, household forms, and childhood symbols.
This piece was clearly made as a true duvet cover, with original metal snaps along one side designed to allow insertion of padding, a duvet filler or comforter. Duvet-style children’s covers from this period are far less common than standard quilts, and examples that survive intact are especially rare.
The quilt top is constructed of pale cotton panels divided by soft pink sashing, bordered in coordinating pink. Appliqué work is hand-cut and hand-stitched, showing the gentle irregularities that define genuine folk art rather than commercial kits. The year “1942” is appliquéd directly into the design.
A rare survivor of early-1940s children’s folk art — warm, graphic, and deeply nostalgic. Recommended use as a nursery heirloom, wall hanging, or framed textile, but if using as child's bedding with any type of filler (like a comforter) do not use for babies under 1 year.
