  • Details
This Antique Economy Patch Scrap Quilt is made of a scrap bag of period cotton prints, woven plaids, shirtings and small-scale dress fabrics, all dating to 1900–1915.

The quilt is composed of repeated pieced blocks set on point and separated by plain cotton setting squares. The blocks are the Economy Patch pattern with the maker varying the placement and proportions of the triangles from block to block. The fabrics include deep red floral cotton, several dark green and black geometric prints, green paisley, turquoise and green prints, red-and-white checks and stripes, delicate pink florals, and multiple woven plaids. Several of the plaids appear to have been cut from clothing or shirting fabrics.

Straight-line sewing machine/treadle machine quilting runs diagonally across the quilt in a large grid. The back is white cotton as is the binding that has been machine stitched (in uneven lines) to both sides. The cotton batting is very lightweight and thin.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition considering its age with strong color, particularly the reds, greens and plaids. There is some yellow color transfer in several of the white blocks along with the irregularities in piecing and construction expected in an early scrap quilt. The later machine quilting is visible throughout. Please review all photographs closely as they form an important part of the description.
