Vintage 48-State Embroidered State Birds & Flowers Quilt – c. 1940s–1950s – Finely Hand Quilted – 64” x 91”

This is a terrific and very detailed vintage 48-state embroidered State Birds & State Flowers Quilt, dating from the 1940s to early 1950s, before Alaska and Hawaii joined the Union in 1959. The quilt features all 48 states then comprising the United States, with a very detailed embroidered bird and flower motif representing each state.

The hand quilting is not only done in very tiny stitches, but the maker added tiny, very dense and detailed quilted bird motifs throughout the sashing. All of the quilting is entirely by hand and in the pink areas also includes flowers, leaves and geometric designs. The white embroidered blocks have echo quilting around the embroidery, further emphasizing each bird. The pale blue border is also hand quilted with decorative motifs.

Each white block is beautifully hand embroidered in remarkable detail with the state bird, state flowers, decorative ribbon, and the state name. The back is pale blue cotton that has been turned to the front and handstitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is thin and very lightweight.

CONDITION: Very good vintage condition with the hand embroidery remaining vibrant and intact. There is one very light tan mark about the size of a nickel in one corner block which became lighter but did not come out in a soak. Please examine the photos as they form an important part of the description. The quilt has been soaked, freshly hand washed and line dried, giving it a light, natural, sun-dried cotton scent (not artificially fragranced).
