Vintage 1930s Endless Steps Quilt – Depression Era Cotton & Feedsack Fabrics – Hand Quilted Patchwork – 85 x 87

This is an unusual and beautifully bright Endless Steps patchwork quilt dating to approximately the late 1930s or early 1940s.

The quilt is composed of numerous (36) individually pieced Endless Steps blocks made from a wide assortment of period cottons, including ginghams, plaids, checks, small geometric prints, florals and novelty prints. The fabrics include the pastel pinks, blues, greens and aquas strongly associated with Depression-era quilts, together with several darker red and blue prints.

Most of the blocks are separated by salmon-colored sashing with narrow white bars. Along one side, the maker changed to bright red sashing, creating a distinctive asymmetrical section that reflects the scrap-based construction of the quilt.

The individual blocks contain a particularly good assortment of 1930s and early-1940s fabrics including feedsack and dress cottons of the period, mixed with ginghams and other household sewing remnants.

The quilt is hand quilted, with straight-line quilting through the pieced blocks and sashing and circular quilting motifs at the solid intersections. It has a plain white cotton backing that has been turned to the front and handstitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is lightweight.

CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition consistent with age. Please review all photographs closely as they form an important part of the description. The quilt has been soaked, freshly hand washed and line dried, giving it a light, natural, sun-dried cotton scent (not artificially fragranced).
