This is a lovely little vintage string-pieced star quilt dating to the mid-1930s, approximately 1933–1938.
The center is constructed in an eight-point string star pattern using a large assortment of period cotton scraps, including small-scale florals, checks, stripes, geometric prints, shirtings, and feedsack-type fabrics in blue, green, turquoise, lavender, red, pink, yellow, and cream. The star is set against a dusty pink ground with a pale blue border.
The fabric assortment is strongly characteristic of Depression-era cottons as is the construction. It is hand quilted in steady and even small stitches and in simple patterns like four-pointed stars and connecting diamonds along the border. The simplicity and the size raise the likelihood this was a first project of a young quilter which is likely why there is no sign of machine stitching - it is entirely handstitched.
The back is a red and white small-scale floral cotton print while the binding is a very narrow cream-white cotton that has been handstitched to both sides. The cotton batting is very lightweight and thin.
CONDITION: The quilt is in very good vintage condition. The colors and quilting remain strong. Please review all photos as they form an important part of the description. Note that on that back there is a date tag from a state or local quilt documentation/indexing project, indicating the quilt was registered as a vintage quilt by someone in April of 1976. Unfortunately I was not able to find the quilt (or its maker) in the consolidated Quilt Index since the tag contains only the date, not a unique index number.
