Charming late 19th century miniature Hexagon Quilt, dating to the 1890s to early 1900s. Measuring just 11 1/2” x 11 1/2”, this small quilt is entirely hand pieced from tiny hexagons measuring slightly less than 1 inch across.
The quilt is made of Victorian dress-fabric scraps, including silks, satins, taffetas, finely ribbed fabrics, jacquards, wool or wool-blend dress goods, and cottons. The colors range from deep blues, greens, browns and purples to brilliant red, orange, yellow, turquoise and pink, creating a wonderful miniature mosaic. The variety of dress fabrics and intense aniline-dyed colors are consistent with Victorian-era scrap quilting and fancywork.
The back is black sateen that has been turned to the front and hand stitched to form the front border and the binding. This little quilt does not appear to have any batting.
CONDITION: Very good antique condition. Several silk hexagons show minor fraying, thinning, or deterioration, consistent with weighted Victorian silks, along with minor age-related wear to the black border and backing. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description.
