This is an unusual and vibrant folk art quilt TOP ONLY made of 12 hand-embroidered, crayon-tinted nursery vignettes dating to the 1930s, all framed by later vivid red-and-white concentric border strips.
Each individual panel showcases Depression-era craft of wax-crayon tinting combined with meticulous hand embroidery.
Crayon tinting—often cataloged in vintage pattern literature as “crayon craft” or “crayonexing”—is a mixed-media textile technique where standard wax crayons were used to color unbleached or bleached cotton muslin, heat-set into the fiber, and finished with hand-embroidered outlines.
While hand-coloring textiles with ink and dye dates back to the 19th century, wax-crayon tinting peaked between 1925 and 1940, coinciding with the Great Depression. It remained an popular through the World War II era before declining in the 1950s as mass-produced screen-printed juvenile cottons and pre-printed cheater quilts flooded the market.
The storybook animals and classic nursery figures includes:
Humpty Dumpty perched atop a brick wall in striped trousers and a tilted cap A bonneted duck in a polka-dot ruffle shawl waddling past a red-roofed barn An Easter hare carrying a woven pack laden with decorated eggs A country bear playing a fiddle atop a tree stump before a thatched cottage An owl perched on a branch wearing spectacles, a bow tie, and a dapper waistcoat Storybook pigs in party attire holding balloons, strolling with walking sticks, and modeling flouncy dresses
The 1930s blocks were later assembled, likely sometime in the 1960s or 70s, and expanded with deep crimson red and crisp white bands, transforming an orphan nursery set into a full-length 70” × 90” top.
