Beautiful antique Cadet Blue/Medium Indigo Blue Nine Patch quilt dating to the 1890s, featuring a striking combination of indigo blue, vivid reds, pinks, and dark printed cotton fabrics. The traditional Nine Patch blocks are arranged on point, alternating with large blue setting squares that create a vivid geometric design. Many of the 2-inch squares are made from two or more fabric scraps as can be seen in the photos.
There is an interesting assortment of 19th-century cotton prints, including Turkey red and pink fabrics with small geometric patterns, stripes, and delicate motifs, contrasted against dark brown and black shirting-style prints. The rich blue setting fabric provides a beautiful background for the colorful blocks.
The quilt is hand pieced and extensively hand quilted, with closely spaced straight-line quilting that forms a crosshatch grid across the entire surface. The back is a blue cotton print with a delicate white pattern. The quilt has been knife edge finished and handstitched closed.
CONDITION: Very good antique condition overall. One Nine Patch block has some thinning and fabric deterioration affecting the red fabric squares, as shown in the close-up photographs. The remainder of the quilt presents beautifully, with attractive colors, wonderful hand quilting, and the soft texture developed through generations of use. Please NOTE: Though the blue fabric may appear slate gray in some photographs, that is a quirk of the light - it is cadet blue/French blue or Cornflower Blue.
