Antique Apple Blossom Appliqué Quilt 1880s Hand Quilted Red Yellow Floral Quilt 83 x 81

Exquisitely quilted Antique Apple Blossom Appliqué Quilt dating from 1880–1900. This striking late 19th-century quilt features nine floral arrangements, each with three golden yellow blossoms accented with deep reddish-orange appliqué. The flowers are connected by elongated cream-tannish colored stems and leaves against a white cotton background.

The cream-tan stems and leaves were almost certainly green when made nearly 150 years ago. The dyes used to make the green likely were made from synthetic aniline greens introduced in the 1870s that faded to khaki or tan over time. The red and orange colors, on the other hand, remain vibrant because they were made from turkey red and madder dyes which remained colorfast and fade resistant.

The appliqué work has been completed by hand, and the quilt is extensively hand quilted with fine, closely spaced and dense crosshatch grids. The back is white cotton as is the binding that has been handstitched to both sides. The cotton batting is lightweight and very thin.

CONDITION: The quilt is in excellent antique condition with the change in color of the stems over time as explained above due to the use of synthetic aniline dyes. Please examine the photographs as they form an important part of the description. The quilt has been soaked, freshly hand washed and line dried, giving it a light, natural, sun-dried cotton scent (not artificially fragranced).
