Antique 1920s Basket of Pears Quilt – Stuffed Appliqué, Hand Quilted, Feedsack Backing – 68” x 89”

This beautiful and unusual American folk art quilt dates to the 1920s and features a repeating Basket of Pears pattern in rich cheddar orange, green, and white. The quilt combines intricate hand piecing, hand appliqué, stuffed appliqué and exceptionally detailed hand quilting. The quilt originated in Kentucky and dates to approximately 1920–1928.

Each basket is constructed with small cheddar and white triangles, a gracefully curved appliquéd handle, and a stuffed pear motif surrounded by two green leaves. The baskets are arranged diagonally across the white background, creating a striking overall design. A carefully constructed sawtooth border incorporates additional basket elements, while the rounded corners provide an attractive finish.

The hand quilting is dense with closely spaced stitches outlining the baskets and appliqué, along with geometric patterns along the sashing and along the four-sided sawtooth border. The stuffed appliqué gives the pears and leaves a subtle raised appearance.

The white cotton back is made of feed sack cottons and includes the imprint of an original cotton flour sack backing, which retains faint blue lettering from White Frost Self-Rising Flour, produced by G.B.R. Smith Milling Co. The back has been turned to the front and handstitched to form the binding.
