This is an amazing Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt dating to the 1930s–1940s with an elaborate arrangement of 5-inch flower gardens set against a soft sage green background and surrounded by a wide, sunny yellow border.
This remarkable quilt is constructed from at least 5,000 individual hexagons made of period cotton prints, including florals, ginghams, polka dots, geometric prints, and colorful novelty fabrics. The flowers are arranged in a closely spaced garden setting, framed by a double zigzag border in sage green and yellow followed by another border of yellow.
The hand quilting is extraordinary. Each of the thousands of individual hexagons has been meticulously outline quilted by hand while the wide yellow borders feature elaborate hand-quilted feather designs, with additional decorative quilting filling the surrounding spaces. The precision and complexity point to a master quilter.
The back is white cotton while the binding is yellow cotton that has been machine stitched to the front and handstitched to the back. The cotton batting is lightweight and thin.
