This early 20th-century Redwork Quilt is a stunning "Penny Square" style masterpiece, featuring 44 individual hand-embroidered panels. Each square tells a story, from whimsical anthropomorphic animals and nursery motifs to elegant "Calendar Girl" portraits representing the months of the year. Redwork quilts of this scale and detail were often made as "teaching quilts" for children or as community fundraisers.
Crafted during the height of the Redwork movement (c. 1910–1925), this quilt showcases the iconic Turkey Red colorfast embroidery on a white ground, framed by vibrant cornflower blue sashing. The quilt is hand-tied (not quilted).
The back is cornflower blue cotton that has been turned to the front and hand-stitched to form the binding. The batting appears to be light-to-medium weight flannel.
The quilt is in excellent condition with some light fading of the blue fabric.
