This lovely LeMoyne Star Quilt, circa 1930-1940s, was a multi-generational project of Sena Belle Holbrook Seagraves (1888-1944) and her daughter, Opal Seagraves Robinson (1922-2016) who lived in Cabin Creek, West Virginia when the quilt was made, according to a tag (with photos) attached to the back of the quilt. The family later moved to Tipp City, Ohio.
The mother-daughter quilters used classic feedsack prints to make the quilt, including: • Gingham and Polka Dots • Stylized Florals: There are several small-scale, multi-color floral prints on white or light blue grounds that are very characteristic of the Depression era. • Novelty Prints: One star point features a blue fabric with white "X" and "O" or cross-stitch style motifs, which was a popular aesthetic in the 1930s.
The hand-quilting is in outlines of the stars and in diagonal grids in the red open blocks. The back is off-white, cream muslin while the binding has been more recently replaced with a red and blue tiny floral print that has been machine-stitched to both sides. The cotton batting is very lightweight.
CONDITION: The quilt is in very good vintage condition with some dropped quilting stitches visible in some of the red blocks. PLEASE NOTE: Blue lettering from the feedsacks are visible in some of the star motifs but this is original to the quilt and not considered a condition issue.
