This is a lovely, timeworn antique Double Irish Chain Quilt made in indigo blue and soft cream. It dates to the early 20th century and features finely pieced chains composed of tiny (just over 1-inch) alternating squares, set against larger blocks of soft blue shirting fabrics. The hand-quilting is in diagonal grids in perfect, even stitches, including through the blue and white striped, four-sided border.
The quilt is composed of a mix of early cottons, including: • Indigo and overdyed blue fabrics that have experienced natural age fading • Soft blue woven shirtings and plaids • Cream and tan calicos with delicate brown and pink printed motifs • Early small-scale prints, including pink star patterns
The back is plain white muslin while the front border has been turned to the back and machine-stitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is unsized and lightweight.
CONDITION: While between 75-80% intact, the quilt is being sold as a cutter quilt because it has unfortunately experienced extensive fabric loss especially to the bottom and top edges/borders along with: • Fabric loss and thinning, especially in lighter prints • Exposed batting in areas • General fading/wear consistent with its age (100+ years) and use
